The density of sand is really related to the way it is packed down. If you shake it, it'll lower the density. Wet sand is more dense that dry sand, and packed sand is denser than loose sand. If you're looking for the densest material the sand is made of, go for something that is naturally dark in color, like basalt since it is much denser than a white quartz sand. If you can find out the materials that the sand is made of, you can look up the density of the materials here http://www.simetric.co.uk/si_materials.htm.

Density and weight are not the same thing. Density related to how tightly packed the sand is... in which case, the finer the grain, the denser the sand will be, because more can be packed into a smaller space.

The finer the grains, the more tightly it can be packed (and therefore is the most dense). Since most sand that you can buy is predominatly quartzite anyway, density has a lot more to do with the grain size than the mineral content.
