Ever been to Kerala. You should consider yourself lucky if you did not see the roads in a pathetic state. Mostly during monsoons and just after monsoons till the sun is up and about , the roads are in a mess filled with pot holes and crater sized holes. Why can't the state do something about this? Its the 21st century for God's sake. Any workable ideas to improve God's Own?? Country

I agree that the roads there are pretty bad.. compared to other states and cities.. But from what I know the govt is doing something.. lot of road especially the highways are being expanded and there is some work on.. it certainly needs political will and when its political will every person from the panchayat level will have to play a part to make it happen.. We all know that there is no dearth of politics in Kerala.. the challenge is to have a collective goal and prioratize things rather than organizing strikes every alternate day...

Having said that there has been a court recently in J&K based on a petition by a consumer welfare forum.. see below..

Srinagar, Dec 20: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed the state government to take all steps to acquire a machine used for testing the quality of roads.

On a petition filed by Kashmir Consumer Welfare Forum, a division bench comprising Chief Justice B A Khan and Justice Bashir Ahmed Kirmani directed the chief secretary to take all steps for acquiring "Skyhawk", cutting short delays and preferably within four months of receipt of the order.

The machine was affordable and could save the state exchequer money, the court said and added that the Delhi government had already procured it at a cost of about Rs two crores.

The court also directed the Public Works Department secretary to reconstitute a committee for preparing road plan of the city by admitting the IGP Traffic into it and appoint a head who would convene regular meetings.

In his report submitted to the court, the Transport Commissioner said the registration and fitness certificates of 25 years or more vehicles had been cancelled.

He submitted that an expert committee had been formed to look into the matter of fixing age of commercial vehicles.

The commissioner also submitted that four vans for testing the quality of fuel at differenct petrol pumps were available.

The Commissioner was also directed to execute any cooperation agreement with GAIL on CNG.

Maybe its time that the people organize and demand their rights for the taxes they pay...

However not taking anything away from the efforts the Govt. is already making.. see the source link below for more of their achievements. They also have an Open Forum where you can give your feedback and suggestions.. Make use of it.

I visited Kerala this December. It has made lot of progress in tourism industry. I visited 5cities of Kerala and when moving between the cities I also felt that road conditions were bad in Kerala. It does not matter if it is 21st century, the progess is being made. With the rise in tourism the conditions of road will improve. I believe that Kerala will always remain god's own county. "Have faith and be patient" - this is what my mother told me when I discused about the conditions of road in such a good state.

Perhaps Kerala government thinks that in God's own country, the responsibility of making good roads rests with the God. Shift the responsibility to the government and you may have good roads.
