The 24 hour clock was originally devised by the ancient civilisations of Egypt, India and China. It has stuck ever since.

It actually takes the Earth 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds to rotate 360 degrees. The reason for the extra 4 minutes or so it that the earth has to rotate just that little bit more (361 degrees) because it has orbited the sun a little during that period.

Remember my answer on time being relevant. Early man noted by crude marking methods the rising and setting of the sun and stuff. As civilization advanced and they realized that sunrise seem to happen pretty much the same amount of time they started to fiqure out a way to mark that time. Making a long story short, The length of day came before the 24 hours, man just devised the hour to help mark time.

(they also did not know what to do for 2 hours between 11 and 1 oclock on their watches without the 12th hour)

Because if it is 23 hours,12 hours change to 11 hours,14 hours is 12 in AM and 2 in the PM.Not 10 eiher.

Rember to make sure you have 24 hours. In your imangion maybe it's what is it.

There is absolutely no physical significance to an hour. It is simply ancient tradition. You very well could divide a day into 10 or 100 hours if you wanted. Similarly, minutes and seconds also have no cosmic significance.

While the earth is revolving around the sun, it is rotating on its axis. It takes the earth 24 hours to rotate once, and this became the acepted value for the dat.

Note that rotating is different from revolving.

The Earth Revolves around the sun.

The Earth rotates about its' axis.
