There is two types of dating. Absolute dating usually uses radionuclide's to determine age.

There is also relative dating. These are determined by the position of the fossils. In undisturbed ground the oldest are usually the deepest and the youngest near the top layers.

Both have their uses in archeology.

Discoloration in fossils is caused by the minerals in the surrounding soil.
